I love the idea of taking a room that might traditionally be used as a formal dining room and turning it into a sitting room instead.
With two sofas facing each other, it becomes such a pretty spot for conversation, entertaining, or just enjoying a quiet afternoon. I think it's a great way to make use of a space that might otherwise only get used a handful of times a year.
For this room, I wanted something that felt a little dressed up but was still comfortable enough to actually use every day. Soft blue-gray upholstery, creamy whites, antique brass details, and a beautiful patterned rug come together for a look that feels classic without being too formal. The darker walls and architectural details give the space a slightly more sophisticated feel, while all of the softer layers keep it warm and inviting.
The starting point for this room is the beautiful blue-gray color palette.
I wanted something with a little more depth than a typical neutral living room, but nothing too dark or dramatic. The walls have simple picture frame molding painted the same color, which adds architectural interest without making the space feel busy.
The two blue-gray sofas are really what make the room. I love the combination of their relaxed bench cushions and more tailored silhouettes, especially with the pretty turned legs. I've linked a similar find here—the Madeline 90" Sofa from Perigold—which has that same classic shape and beautiful upholstery.
The rug helps tie everything together. Its faded blue and cream pattern adds just enough interest while keeping the room soft and understated. I've linked a similar option here—the Nabela Noor x Livabliss rug—which has that same muted coloring and traditional feel. This rug is such a great price point for a piece that looks like it could be hand woven.
One of my favorite things about this space is the mix of furniture styles.
The sofas feel timeless, but the round marble coffee table with its dark pedestal base brings in something a little more interesting. I love how the white marble lightens up the center of the room and contrasts with the darker upholstery. I've linked a similar find here—the Chapman Marble Oval Coffee Table from Pottery Barn.
The little marble-topped side table is another favorite. Its dark metal base works beautifully with the coffee table without feeling too coordinated. I've linked a similar option here—the Jeanne Round White Marble Table from World Market.
Along the back wall, the creamy white sideboard is such a pretty contrast against the blue-gray paint. I especially love the curved ends, fluted cabinet fronts, and brass hardware. I've linked a similar find here—the Tilde Sideboard from Ballard Designs.
Above it, the arched brass mirror adds height and a little warmth. I've linked a similar option here—the Grand Palais Arch Mirror from Ballard Designs. I love the way its divided panes give it an almost architectural look, especially paired with the simple brass candle sconces on either side.
For me, the accessories are what keep a room like this from feeling too formal.
The patterned pillows add softness to the sofas, while the creamy throw brings in another layer of texture. I especially love mixing a small geometric pattern with something a little more traditional, like the botanical pillow covers.
The chandelier is another piece that really makes the room. The white beading and antique brass details feel elegant without being overly fancy, and I love how it adds a lighter element against the blue-gray walls. I've linked a similar find here—the Beaded Kona Tiered Chandelier from Shades of Light.
I kept the styling on the sideboard fairly simple with a creamy ceramic vase, a few branches, books, and a decorative bowl. The white hydrangeas on the coffee table add a little freshness, while the neutral accessories keep everything feeling collected rather than overly decorated.
And of course, I love the addition of the full-length draperies. Hanging them high gives the windows such a beautiful, finished look and softens all of the molding and architectural details.
This is exactly the kind of room I love putting together—classic pieces, pretty details, and a little color, all working together to create a space that feels comfortable and timeless. It's a room that could easily work for everyday family life but still feel special when you're entertaining.
