Blue-gray built-ins might be my new favorite thing.

I love a white living room, but sometimes a little color makes all the difference. For this space, I paired soft blue upholstery with subtle blue-gray built-ins, white shiplap, and dark walnut floors. The result feels classic and comfortable, with just enough contrast to keep everything interesting.

The built-ins do most of the decorating work.

I wanted the cabinetry to feel like part of the architecture rather than just a place to put the television. Painting the built-ins a soft blue-gray gives the room a focal point without making that entire wall feel too heavy.

The vertical shiplap behind the television ties into the walls, while the simple shelving leaves plenty of room for a few favorite accessories. And I really do mean a few. Not every shelf needs seventeen objects on it.

I'd style these with a mix of books, greenery, and blue-and-white pottery. I've linked the Chadwicks Ceramic Ginger Jar from Birch Lane as a similar option, along with a few decorating books I love, including LifeStyled and Made for Living from Target.

The dark walnut floors are important here, too. With so much white and pale blue throughout the room, that deeper wood tone gives everything a little warmth and keeps the space from feeling washed out.

Two sofas can make a living room feel surprisingly cozy.

I love using two separate sofas when a room has the space for them. You get plenty of seating, but the arrangement still feels more flexible than one enormous sectional.

Here, the soft blue sofas create a comfortable conversation area, with two white swivel chairs balancing things out on the opposite side. I've linked the Westwood Square Arm Sofa from Pottery Barn as a similar option for that relaxed blue upholstery, and the Wimberly Slipcovered Swivel Chair from Wayfair for a comparable white chair.

The swivel chairs are especially useful in a room like this. They can face the sofas when you're entertaining or turn toward the television when everyone settles in for a movie. I will always appreciate furniture that can do more than one thing.

I also love the substantial white coffee table in the center of the room. The Driftway Coffee Table from Serena & Lily is a similar find with that same clean, classic feel. And the soft blue patterned rug underneath helps connect all the furniture without introducing another strong color. I've linked a similar rug from Wayfair that would be beautiful with this palette.

Behind the sofa, the natural wood console is another favorite detail. I've linked the Everett Long Wood Console Table from World Market as a similar option. It adds some warmth, provides a place for a few accessories, and makes the back of the sofa feel finished rather than forgotten.

The little details keep all that blue and white from feeling too perfect.

Blue and white will always be one of my favorite combinations, but I think it works best when you bring in a few other textures and finishes.

The woven baskets beneath the sofa table, the natural wood accents, and the darker metal finishes all help break up the softer colors. Even the black chandelier adds just enough contrast overhead without competing with the built-ins.

And then there's the window treatment combination, which I probably use more than I should admit. Woven shades paired with full-length ivory drapery are hard to beat. You get texture, softness, and a much more finished look without making the room feel formal. I've linked the Sybil Bamboo Roman Shades and Liz Linen Drapery Panels from TWOPAGES as similar options. These are such a custom look for a great price point!

The blue-and-white ceramic lamp is another easy way to repeat the color without making everything match. I've linked a similar hand-stamped ceramic lamp from Wayfair that would look beautiful beside a sofa or on a console.

And of course, a few white hydrangeas never hurt anything.

What I love most about this room is that it feels pulled together without feeling overly decorated. The built-ins bring the color, the furniture keeps things comfortable, and the mix of wood, woven textures, and classic accessories gives the whole space some warmth. It's the kind of living room that looks beautiful in pictures but still feels like somewhere you'd actually want to spend your time.
