A white kitchen gives you a pretty perfect excuse to bring in color somewhere that’s a whole lot easier to change than the cabinets.

Here, it’s the soft blue counter stools. Paired with dramatic marble, warm brass, natural oak, and crisp white cabinetry, they give the entire kitchen some personality without taking away from that bright, classic feeling.

Counter stools are one of my favorite places to have a little more fun.

Kitchens actually have surprisingly few opportunities to introduce pattern. There usually isn’t much upholstery, you probably aren't putting a giant patterned rug under the island, and the cabinetry takes up most of the visual space.

That’s why a stool like this works so well. The fretwork almost acts like a pattern without introducing another fabric or print.

And if ten years from now you suddenly decide you’re completely over blue—which I personally have a hard time imagining—you can replace the stools without calling a cabinet painter.

When almost everything is white, the materials have to keep the room interesting.

There’s a lot of white here, but it doesn’t feel stark because very little of the room is actually doing the exact same thing.

You have veining and movement in the marble, warmth from the oak floors, shine from the brass, pattern from the stools, and plenty of natural light moving across all of it.

That mix is what makes an all-white kitchen feel layered rather than flat.

I especially like the oversized marble island because it gives the room one substantial focal point. With that much beautiful stone in the center, the cabinetry really doesn’t need to work very hard.

The warm brass is important too. Cooler metal finishes would give the exact same white cabinetry a completely different feeling. Brass warms everything up and works beautifully with the natural oak floors without adding another strong color.

It’s a good reminder that a neutral room doesn’t necessarily need more decor to make it interesting. Sometimes it just needs a better mix of materials.

An open kitchen works best when the room beside it feels connected without matching it.

Because the living room is directly within the kitchen’s sightline, I like carrying some of the same light, relaxed feeling into that space rather than suddenly starting an entirely different color palette.

There’s also one tiny detail in this space that’s such an easy trick: the little shades on the chandelier.

If you have a chandelier with exposed bulbs and it feels a little too bare, clip-on shades can completely change it. They soften the light and give a basic fixture a much more finished look without requiring you to replace the chandelier at all.

Those little details are really what I like about this entire space. Nothing is especially complicated. White cabinetry creates the foundation, marble adds movement, brass and oak bring warmth, and the blue stools give the kitchen just enough personality.

It still feels like a white kitchen—just a much more interesting one.
