Classic Coastal Living Room with Marble Fireplace

This is my favorite kind of coastal room—the kind that doesn’t need a seashell anywhere to tell you it’s coastal.
Soft blue, warm white, natural oak, marble, and plenty of texture give the room that light, relaxed feeling, while the built-ins and fireplace keep everything classic. It’s comfortable, calm, and polished without feeling like nobody is allowed to sit down.
A mostly neutral room needs a little something to keep it interesting.
The marble fireplace is the natural starting point here. With matching built-ins on either side, there’s already a lot of symmetry in the room, so I wanted the furniture to feel softer and a little more relaxed.
The oatmeal slipcovered sofa does exactly that. It’s light enough to keep the room feeling airy, but warmer than a stark white sofa would be. Then there are the blue chairs, which might be my favorite part.

When you’re working with white, cream, pale blue, and natural wood, the room can start feeling a little flat if every surface has the same finish.
Here, there’s linen against marble, woven jute against smooth oak, and a beaded wood chandelier hanging overhead. None of those things introduces another strong color, but together they give the room so much more depth.

I know these show up in my designs a lot, but I keep coming back to them because they give you that fuller, more custom look without the custom-drapery price tag. I have yet to become tired of that combination.

Jute and wool-jute rugs are especially good in rooms like this because they add texture while still reading almost like a neutral. They’re also fairly forgiving when actual life happens on top of them, which is always worth considering when choosing a living room rug.
Statement lighting doesn’t have to mean shiny or dramatic.
The beaded wood chandelier is one of those pieces that you notice right away, but it still feels completely at home with everything else in the room.

It’s definitely an investment, but if you’re going to splurge somewhere, lighting can be a really good place to do it. A beautiful fixture can change the entire feeling of a room without taking up a single square foot of floor space.

That repetition is really the trick throughout this whole space. The blue appears in the chairs and smaller accents. Natural texture moves from the rug to the coffee table to the chandelier. Cream and white carry through the sofa, walls, drapery, and built-ins.
Nothing matches exactly, but everything feels like it belongs together.
And that’s usually when a neutral room feels the best—not when you keep adding more decor, but when you have just enough color, texture, and warmth that you can finally stop messing with it.
